What is R600A refrigerant? R600A is a refrigerant grade Iso-Butane that is available as a natural refrigerant. The refrigerant is used in a wide array of applications and is the perfect replacement for harmful refrigerants, such as R12, R22 and other CFCs and HCFCs.
Wanted to share some insight as I had the opportunity to work on an R600A unit the other day. Someone stabbed the evaporator plate trying to de-ice it and punctured it, letting the 1 oz of R600A out and then calling me to see if I could fix it over the $400 replacement.
I j-u-s-t happened to noticed only the other day that NOW our hotel room refrigerators (Danby units) are hydrocarbon (R600A-Isobutane). Hydrocarbon refrigerants are everywhere now, so you’d best read up on it from any credible source you can find. It’s not just in refrigeration either. Window-shakers and PTACs are being made with it in them.

R600A is heavier than air, so a leak of it could have pooled into the bottom of the freezer/fridge compartment as a vapor (maybe the same level as the defrost heater?) or stirred into the freezer section’s air by the evap fan.
